Index Art Center, Newark

The Index Art Center in Newark, founded in May 2009 by Lowell Craig, Seth Goodwin, and DC Smith, promotes visual arts and supports local artists. Initially part of Redsaw Gallery, the founders have played a crucial role in the development of Newark’s art scene and downtown area.

The center collaborates extensively with schools and other non-profit organizations to offer educational and community-based programs within an active art gallery setting. The center presents a diverse, year-round program of new exhibits in its gallery. These exhibits often involve collaborative projects with community organizations, charities, and other non-profit groups.

In addition to exhibitions, the center provides educational programming, including artist talks, special tours, and workshops for young artists, and high school, and college students. These activities help to foster an appreciation for the arts and develop the skills of aspiring artists.

Index Art Center is a non-profit contemporary arts organization committed to supporting and playing a significant role in Newark’s annual Open Doors event, hosted by the Newark Arts Council. Open Doors attracts artists and audiences from across the country, showcasing Newark’s vibrant arts scene and supporting downtown businesses.

One of the center’s flagship events is its annual film festival, FILMIDEO. This festival celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent filmmakers and video artists from around the world. For an entire month, Index Art Center transforms its gallery into a screening theater, showcasing works on a 10' x 10' screen to audiences of up to 100 people per screening. The festival features a mix of local, national, and international artists.
