Jnan Sbil Gardens, Fes

Jnan Sbil Gardens, Fes (must see)

This gorgeous green space just outside the medina walls in Fes is a testament to the importance of gardens in Moroccan society. Originally part of the Royal Palace, they were donated to the city by Sultan Moulay Hassan in the 19th century.

Following a meticulous renovation in 2010, the 7.5-hectare gardens have been restored to their original 19th-century layout, with careful attention to detail. Recent replanting efforts have reintroduced a diverse array of vegetation, including bamboo, papyrus, eucalyptus, palms, weeping willows, roses, cacti, and ferns. The large pond and numerous fountains create a tranquil atmosphere, inviting visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll through this botanical paradise.

An old, non-functioning waterwheel serves as a historic reminder of how the local rivers once powered the medina. Additionally, the presence of a well-maintained public toilet near the center of the park enhances the overall experience.

The joining of the walls between Fès el-Bali and Fès el-Jdid at the end of the 19th century marked an important historical development in the area. Some of the buildings surrounding these gardens date back to that significant period, adding to the cultural richness of the site.

Created by the French in the early 20th century, Ville Nouvelle (New Town) is a relatively modern central district of Fez. A far cry from the sensory overload provided by the old Medina, this neighborhood was originally designed to accommodate foreigners and affluent Moroccans only.
