Joysmith Gallery & Studio, situated in the South Main Art District of Memphis, has a rich history and an inspiring foundation story. The gallery, which opened its doors in January 2000, originally operated for nearly two decades in Northern California. The move to Memphis was a personal decision by its founder, Brenda Joysmith, driven by her longing to return to her roots following a remarkable recovery from a significant health challenge-a brain tumor.

The gallery's collection is diverse and culturally rich, focusing primarily on contemporary art from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. It showcases works by African, African-American, Asian, Caribbean, Latin-, Native-, and South-American artists. Additionally, it has a unique emphasis on antique tribal arts and fabrics from Africa, with special attention given to Ife and Benin bronzes, as well as Ewe, Kente, and Kuba cloths.

Initially, Joysmith Gallery & Studio was primarily a platform for Brenda Joysmith's own art, particularly her original pastel works and prints. Her creations have been widely recognized and are part of numerous prestigious corporate, institutional, museum, and private collections. However, since 2000, the gallery has broadened its scope. It now includes a variety of works from both established and emerging artists, and it actively participates in art venues nationally.
