Tom Lee Park, Memphis

Named after an African American river worker who saved the lives of 32 people on a sinking steamboat, the M.E. Newman, in 1925, this 30 acre one mile park is a popular location for joggers, walkers, roller bladders and cyclists. The park offers a panoramic view of the Mississippi River as well as a view of the Arkansas coastline. In 2006, a bronze sculpture by David Alan Clark was erected in the park. The statue shows Tom Lee rescuing one of the passengers.

The park is well-known for the many events it hosts. One of the most popular is the Memphis in May celebration, a month long celebration that includes the following events: The Beale Street Music Festival, the International Week, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, and the Sunset Symphony.

The Four Tops, the Barkays, and Mavis Staples are just a few of the well-known artists who have performed at the music festival. The International Week features food, song, and dance from countries around the world. Competitors from around the world attend the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, one of the world's largest pork barbecue cooking competitions. The Sunset Symphony features the music of the Memphis Symphony.
