The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Building is a major civic landmark and the headquarters of the city’s municipal government. Constructed between 1927 and 1930 during the British colonial period, it was designed by Scottish architect James S. C. Wynnes to accommodate the expanding responsibilities of municipal administration.

Following its formal inauguration in January 1932, the building became a center of local government, overseeing public services, infrastructure, and urban development. It continues to serve as the administrative headquarters of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation. The building combines Anglo-Mughal, Indo-Saracenic, and colonial architectural influences. Constructed using local yellow Gizri sandstone and pink Jodhpur sandstone on its front façade, it features a symmetrical composition, monumental entrance, arched windows, and detailed stonework. Its most prominent feature is the central clock tower, which rises approximately 162 feet above the building. Spacious halls, broad corridors, offices, and council chambers reflect the scale and civic importance of the institution for which it was designed. Beyond its architecture, the KMC Building has played an important role in Karachi’s civic history for nearly a century. It has witnessed the transformation of the city from a colonial port into a large modern metropolis while continuing to house municipal administration.

Because the building remains an active government facility, interior access is generally restricted to official purposes. Visitors can instead appreciate its sandstone façade, clock tower, arched openings, and decorative details from surrounding public areas while exploring the development of municipal architecture and local government in Pakistan.
