Lakshmi Building, Karachi

Lakshmi Building is one of Karachi's most iconic heritage landmarks and stands as the city's first skyscraper. Completed in 1938, it was commissioned by the Lakshmi Insurance Company—founded by the prominent leader Lala Lajpat Rai—and designed by the Karachi-based architectural firm Maysers D H Daruwala & Co. Positioned at a major commercial intersection, it was the tallest building in Karachi at the time of the Partition of India, holding this title until 1955.

The building was officially inaugurated on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1938, by the celebrated poet and political activist Sarojini Naidu. Designed in the Art Deco style, the building is distinguished by its clean geometric forms, vertical emphasis, and decorative horizontal bands. A striking feature of its construction is the use of pink Jaipur sandstone imported specifically for its facade. Originally, a 10-foot-tall statue of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi stood atop the building as a symbol of wealth and prosperity; however, this statue was removed shortly after Partition when the building transitioned to new ownership. Inside, the building was also famous for its state-of-the-art clock tower and one of the city's earliest iron elevators.

Beyond its architectural elegance, the Lakshmi Building represents a golden era of Karachi's pre-partition financial growth. Today, despite decades of wear and its ground floor being converted into a bustling marketplace for electronics and toys, it remains a heavily occupied and vital historical anchor within the old commercial district.
