New Memon Mosque, Karachi

New Memon Mosque, commonly known as Memon Masjid, is one of Karachi’s oldest and largest mosques and an important place of worship. Its first managing committee was formed on September 17, 1948, the first call to prayer was given on July 15, 1949, and its foundation stone was laid on August 24, 1949, by Governor-General Khawaja Nazimuddin.

Developed with support from the Memon community, it accommodates large congregations for daily prayers, Friday worship, Ramadan, and Eid celebrations. The mosque is distinguished by Islamic architecture dominated by three large domes, two tall minarets, arched openings, decorative details, and a broad, symmetrical façade. Its light-colored exterior and repeated arches create a prominent presence within the surrounding commercial area. Inside, extensive prayer spaces accommodate thousands of worshippers, with additional areas used when attendance increases during Friday prayers and religious festivals. The mosque has been enlarged and altered over time rather than remaining a single unchanged structure from its early years. Beyond regular worship, New Memon Mosque remains closely connected with community religious life. It is particularly known for its longstanding Ramadan iftar, when worshippers, shopkeepers, laborers, customers, and passers-by gather to break their fast together at sunset. Religious gatherings and marriage ceremonies have also taken place at the mosque.

Visitors can observe its domes, minarets, arches, and active prayer spaces while respecting worshippers, access requirements, and appropriate dress. During major religious occasions, the large congregations also demonstrate the mosque’s continuing importance to the surrounding Muslim community.
