Kestnergesellschaft (Kestner Society), Hanover
The Kestner Society (Kestnergesellschaft) stands as one of Germany's largest and most renowned art institutions. Since its establishment in 1916, it has consistently focused on contemporary art, delivering creativity and innovation to the public. Throughout its history, the Kestner Society has proudly hosted installations by some of the most exciting artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Moreover, it transcends traditional art boundaries by embracing design, architecture, fashion, literature, philosophy, humanities, and music in its exhibitions.
In 1936, the museum faced temporary closure due to pressure from the Nazi government, which considered its displays as showcasing "degenerate art." However, following World War II, the museum was reopened through the efforts of civic-minded Hannover residents, including Hermann Bahlsen, Wilhelm Stichweh, Bernhard Sprengel, and Günther Beindorff.
By the 1990s, the original building could no longer accommodate the museum's technological requirements, prompting the search for a new space. The Kestner Society has been graced by the works of renowned artists such as Picasso, Kandinsky, Klee, El Lissitzky, Warhol, and Miro in recent years. The museum maintains a dynamic array of exhibitions and educational programs, ensuring an exciting experience for art enthusiasts. It operates from 11 am to 6 pm from Tuesday to Sunday, with extended hours until 8 pm on Thursdays. Additionally, visitors can take advantage of free guided tours offered at specific times during the day, although the museum remains closed on Mondays.
