Kotzia Square, Athens

To get a glimpse of 19th-century Athens at its finest visit the beautifully restored Kotzia Square. This area boasts grand neoclassical buildings, including the Athens City Hall, designed in 1874, and the marbled National Bank of Greece. Right next to the bank, you'll find the more modern Cultural Centre, cleverly constructed to showcase the remains of the ancient Acharnian Gate.

Since 1996, the square's focal point has been the magnificent sculpture of Theseus, artfully surrounded by fountains, creating a captivating blend of curves and planes. Sculpted by Sophia Vari-Botero, the statue depicts the heroic Theseus and his many brave deeds and labors. Crafted in bronze, the sculpture's composition of flowing circles and geometric pieces effectively portrays Theseus's multifaceted achievements, most notably his triumph over the dreaded Cretan Minotaur.

In the middle of the square, you'll also notice a fenced-off excavation area displaying a large section of an ancient road, along with several ancient tombs and small buildings. The impressive Old Town Hall, which now serves as the city's registry office, and the Gregotel Pallas Athena hotel are also located nearvy. Moreover, the imposing Omonoia Square is just a short walk away.
