Kunst und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik (The Art and Exhibition Hall), Bonn

The Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany is one of Germany’s premier venues for high-profile temporary exhibitions. Located on Bonn’s famous “Museum Mile” and inaugurated in 1992, this cultural center was envisioned as a forum for art, culture, science, and political discourse.

Its powerfully minimalist cube-like design, conceived by Viennese architect Gustav Peichl, features 16 corten-steel pillars symbolizing the German states and three conical skylights-aptly nicknamed “light towers”-that punctuate the rooftop. Inside, the forum offers approximately 5,600 m² of flexible exhibition space, typically hosting two to four major shows simultaneously.

It brings together a wide range of disciplines-spanning fine arts, archaeology, science, technology, and social history-through globally sourced, thematic presentations. Highlights have included collections from major museums, blockbuster archaeological exhibitions such as Tutankhamun, retrospectives of renowned artists such as Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer, and large-scale scientific and cultural narratives.

Beyond its exhibition halls, it is also a lively cultural hub. The adjacent “Forum” auditorium seats over 500 and regularly hosts lectures, performances, film screenings, concerts, and academic symposiums. A full public program supports the exhibitions through guided tours, workshops, and educational activities. Visitors also enjoy amenities like the museum shop, art library, and the onsite Restaurant Gustav, which even offers a rooftop terrace.
