Museum of the German History, Bonn

Museum of the German History, Bonn (must see)

The Museum of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany is one of Germany’s most popular museums, welcoming around 850,000 visitors annually. This dynamic institution offers a compelling journey through German contemporary history-from the end of World War II to the present day.

The museum’s permanent exhibition, titled “Our History. Germany since 1945,” showcases over 7,000 artifacts along with 160 interactive media stations. Key exhibits include tangible fragments of the Berlin Wall, a vintage 1950s cinema setup, the actual Chancellor’s train carriage, Honecker’s arrest warrant, and East Germany’s first “Green Card” for foreign IT specialists.

What sets the museum apart is its experiential design, aimed at making history engaging and relatable. Visitors can sit in reconstructed parliament seating to simulate voting, explore immersive media terminals with time-witness testimonies, and wander through a reconstructed 1950s film theatre.

The museum also features a well-equipped information centre and library, containing over 180,000 volumes dedicated to German Democratic Republic history and inter-German relations. In addition, it regularly hosts changing temporary exhibitions and public programs, including themed retrospectives, film showings, lectures, and panel discussions.
