La Cruz del Viajero, Lima
The Cross of the Traveller (La Cruz del Viajero), a monumental cross situated in what is now the district of Pueblo Libre within the city of Lima, holds historical significance. It was erected back in 1579 under the auspices of Catholic missionaries. This cross served as a significant waypoint for travelers seeking protection on their journey towards the port of Callao, a route often plagued by banditry.
In the year 1759, the cross was relocated 100 meters from its original spot to a square that now bears its name, situated at the intersection of Torre Tagle and Julio C. Tello streets. Notably, both José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar are reputed to have knelt before this cross.
In fact, it is even said that Bolívar himself was among those who purportedly received miraculous aid from the Holy Cross of the Traveller. According to popular accounts, Bolívar was healed of an ailment that afflicted him, merely by seeking its divine intervention.
Today, The Cross of the Traveller holds the status of being recognized as Cultural Heritage of the Nation. It is conveniently located just an 8-minute stroll away from Plaza Bolívar, at the intersection of Sucre and Cipriano Dulanto avenues. Visitors can explore it at their convenience, any time of the day.
