Labatt Brewery, London
John Kinder Labatt entered a partnership in 1847, purchasing an existing brewery and establishing what would become one of Canada’s largest brewing companies. By the late 19th century, it had expanded with the help of railway transport and rising demand. After a major fire in 1874, a larger and more modern facility was rebuilt, and the company continued to grow through the 20th century with new brands and wider distribution.
The brewery complex reflects different stages of industrial development. Early brick buildings stand beside later structures built for large-scale production. Silos, processing areas, and bottling lines show how barley, hops, water, and yeast are turned into beer. While production is now automated, the main steps remain the same, and the site produces a large share of beer consumed across Canada.
Inside, visitors can learn about both traditional techniques and modern technology through guided tours and displays. Exhibits show how recipes are developed, how quality is checked, and how packaging changed from barrels to bottles and cans. Historical items and refrigeration highlight changes in storage and transport.
