Laurentiuskapelle (Laurentius Chapel), Miltenberg
The Laurentius Chapel, first recorded in 1380 through a foundation established by Canon Berthold Forstmeister von Gelnhausen, has for centuries provided a quiet place of devotion for the people of Alt-Miltenberg. Architecturally, the chapel is a mix of periods. The choir was built and dated in 1456, with richly wrought frescoes that were later rediscovered. The nave was expanded in 1594 and one of its most precious treasures is a late-Gothic winged altarpiece.
Surrounding the chapel is the Laurentius Cemetery, which is itself a kind of open-air museum of local funerary art. The gravestones show the skill of regional stone-cutters from the late 16th century through the 19th century. Even when closed, the setting, the exterior views of the chapel, the cemetery, and the rivers Mud and Main nearby add to its charm.
