Lezgi Mosque, Baku

Lezgi Mosque, sometimes referred to as Ashur Mosque, is a 12th-century mosque established in 1169. It acquired its present name during the oil boom of the 19th century, when laborers flocked to Baku in search of work. Lezgin workers from northeastern Azerbaijan used the mosque for religious services, which led to the widespread use of the name.

The mosque has a simple rectangular form, with a small entrance leading into the prayer hall. Two small windows open along one side of the building. Although modest in appearance, the structure reflects centuries of Baku’s religious and architectural history.

Its unassuming exterior also concealed evidence of an even earlier structure. During restoration work carried out in 1970, two semicircular arches were uncovered beneath the building. Their discovery indicated that the mosque had been constructed on the foundations of an older structure.
