Liberty Cinema, Colombo
Liberty Cinema opened in 1955 and has been part of everyday movie-going for many years. When it first opened, cinema was a popular and affordable way for people to relax and spend time together. Unlike many older theatres that later closed, Liberty Cinema stayed in use and continued to attract regular audiences. Because of this, it is known more as a living part of daily culture than as a preserved historic building.
While the outside still shows its mid-20th-century look, the inside has changed a lot. In 2017, the cinema was redeveloped into a two-screen complex called Liberty Screen 1 and Liberty Lite. This replaced the old single-hall setup. Today, the cinema is operated by Scope Cinemas and offers modern features such as reclining seats, 3D screenings, and Dolby 7.1 surround sound. These upgrades give it a comfortable, high-end feel that contrasts with the older exterior.
The cinema shows both Sinhala-language films and popular international movies. Evenings and weekends are the busiest, with many families and students. Ticket prices are usually better value than at newer premium cinemas, making it popular with a wide range of visitors.
