Library of Virginia, Richmond

Library of Virginia, Richmond

The Library of Virginia, located in Richmond, serves as the official library agency, archival institution, and reference library for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Situated on East Broad Street, just two blocks from the Virginia State Capitol, it relocated to its current premises in 1997. Originally named the Virginia State Library, it has evolved significantly since its inception.

The origins of the Library trace back to the colonial era when it served as a repository for the official use of the colonial Council and other state authorities. The first permanent location was a modest room atop the State Capitol. As Virginia's collection of books and official records expanded, necessitating more space, the Library endured several relocations. By 1892, it moved into a purpose-built facility on Capitol Square, known today as the Oliver Hill Building, due to space constraints.

This location became insufficient over time, leading to another move in 1940 to a site on the edge of Capitol Square. This history of growth underscores the Library's evolving role in managing and preserving Virginia's rich documentary heritage.

Today, the Library of Virginia holds arguably the most extensive collection of materials related to Virginia's government, history, and culture, making it an invaluable resource for both researchers and the general public. Its archives include many items dating from the early colonial period, highlighting its critical role in preserving the state's historical record.
