Lucknow Zoo, Lucknow

Lucknow Zoo, Lucknow

The Lucknow Zoo was established in 1921 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales. The zoo spreads across 71.6 acres, making it one of India’s most historic and expansive zoological parks. Set within the former 18th‑century royal Banarasi Garden, founded by Nawab Nasiruddin Haider, the park still retains remnants such as the classic "Pavilion of the Jewel Pond", which was even featured in the film Umrao Jaan.

With over 1,000 animals and birds representing nearly 97–104 species, Lucknow Zoo is home to majestic creatures like Bengal tigers (including rare white tigers Raghu and Radha), Asiatic lions, Indian rhinos, hoolock gibbons, and an orangutan-one of only two in India. The animal collection also includes deer, bears, great pied hornbills, giant squirrels, and a well-curated aquarium showcasing indigenous and exotic fish species.

The zoo offers several attractions beyond animal exhibits. Ride the beloved toy train, first launched in 1969 and updated in 2014, as it loops through the park and past major enclosures. The butterfly park, added in 2018, hosts over 80 varieties of plants and around 28 butterfly species, making it the first such facility in Uttar Pradesh. Visitors also enjoy paddle-boating on the zoo pond, family-friendly lawns and play areas, and a nature interpretation centre featuring interactive exhibits and educational programming.

Inside the zoo grounds, the Uttar Pradesh State Museum resides within the park-displaying ancient sculptures, coins, decorative arts, and even an Egyptian mummy and vintage aircraft once used by Indian dignitaries. The park is also noted for its lush, labeled botanical diversity, including rare medicinal species and culturally significant trees like the Parijaat.
