The General Post Office Building, Lucknow
The General Post Office Building, commonly known as the GPO, combines elements of colonial heritage, Gothic design, and cultural significance. Serving both a practical role and a historical one, the structure was originally constructed between 1929 and 1932. Before becoming a post office, it functioned as the Ring Theatre-an elite recreational space reserved for British officers and their families.
Notably, Indians were prohibited entry, and theatrical performances, screenings, and high-society balls took place here. Later, the Kakori conspiracy trial of 1925, involving freedom fighters like Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaquallah Khan, was held in a special court set up on the premises.
The building's transformation into the city’s General Post Office in 1932 introduced a host of architectural enhancements. Designed by British architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester, its façade features Gothic motifs, red brick and limestone construction (notably built without using iron), a grand central hall, and a four-faced clock tower, all surrounded by a triangular garden adorned with colorful flower beds. A marble plaque above the entrance reads "Post & Telegraph Offices – 1929‑1932", marking its period of renovation.
Today, the GPO remains fully operational yet continues to exude old-world charm. Alongside postal counters, visitors can have personalized stamps made-featuring family photos or local heritage imagery.
