Lviv National Art Gallery, Lviv

Lviv National Art Gallery, Lviv (must see)

The Borys Voznytsky Lviv National Art Gallery stands as Ukraine’s largest art museum, housing more than 67,000 works from Ukrainian, Polish and wider European artists. Founded as a municipal gallery in 1897 and formally opened in 1907, the institution eventually grew from local aspirations into a national cultural landmark.

Much of the collection is displayed in two historic palaces near Lviv’s centre, each offering a different slice of art history. In the older of the two, Potocki Palace, European art from the 14th to 18th centuries resides, showcasing works from Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Flemish and other schools. Meanwhile, Łoziński Palace contains 19th- to early 20th-century European paintings as well as modern and contemporary Ukrainian and regional art.

Over time, the Gallery expanded beyond its palaces, gaining responsibility for fifteen smaller museums and historical sites in and around Lviv, including specialized branches for sculpture, modernism, and heritage-buildings. This network offers visitors a chance to explore a broad span of visual culture — from medieval and Renaissance works to modern Ukrainian art.

Visiting the Borys Voznytsky Gallery offers not only a journey through centuries of European and Ukrainian art, but also a sense of the city’s layered history. Visitors drawn to Baroque interiors, 19th-century realism or contemporary experimentation will find the collection varied and engaging, creating a wide-ranging cultural experience just a short walk from Lviv’s historic centre.
