Mainzer Kammerspiele, Mainz
The Mainzer Kammerspiele is a private theater in Mainz, established in 1986 through the collaboration of professional freelance actors. Located in Fort Malakoff Park, this theater has become a significant cultural hub, hosting over 200 performances each season. With a broad spectrum of contemporary drama, the theater premieres an average of seven in-house productions annually. Nine ensembles are currently active at the Kammerspiele, delivering a diverse range of performances, from traditional and experimental spoken theater to contemporary ballet, revues, and musicals aimed at children.
A key focus of the theater is the promotion of contemporary playwrights, offering them a platform for premieres. In addition to its productions, the Kammerspiele enhances its repertoire through festivals such as the Figure Theater Festival and the Children's Theater Festival, as well as special guest performances like Chanson de Luxe. The theater also collaborates with various cultural initiatives, hosting parts of the No Strings Attached – puppet theater & more festivals.
While the theater receives substantial subsidies from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the city of Mainz to cover fixed costs, the individual ensembles self-finance their productions through ticket sales. This income supports expenses related to set design, costumes, performance rights, and fees for artists and technical staff.
Managed by a permanent team and supported by volunteers, the Mainzer Kammerspiele operates with a total of around 90 people, welcoming approximately 30,000 visitors each season. The venue is also available for private events, offering a versatile space for a variety of occasions.
