Manastirea Sfintii Trei Ierarhi (Three Hierarchs Monastery), Iasi (must see)

The Monastery of the Three Hierarchs is one of the most important religious and architectural monuments in Romania. Founded by Prince Vasile Lupu between 1637 and 1639, it became a symbol of princely authority, Orthodox faith, and cultural ambition. Dedicated to Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint John Chrysostom, it soon developed into an important spiritual and scholarly center in Moldavia.

The monastery is especially known for the carved decoration of its church. Nearly every exterior surface is covered with stone ornamentation, arranged in more than thirty horizontal bands of floral, geometric, and religious motifs. The designs blend Byzantine, Armenian, Georgian, Persian, Ottoman, and Renaissance influences. Historical accounts say the exterior was once highlighted with gold and silver leaf, which gave the carved stonework an even richer appearance.

The monastery also occupies an important place in Romanian history. It housed one of the earliest printing presses in Moldavia and supported religious and scholarly publications. The relics of Saint Parascheva were kept here for more than two centuries, after Prince Vasile Lupu acquired them by paying the debts of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In 1821, Alexander Ypsilantis issued a proclamation here that helped launch the Greek War of Independence.

Today, visitors can admire the detailed stone façade, the quiet church interior, and monuments linked to major figures of Romanian history. Inside are the tombs of Prince Vasile Lupu and Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the first ruler of the united Romanian principalities. The monastery remains an active place of worship and a cultural landmark, reflecting Moldavia’s religious, artistic, and historical heritage.
