Casa Dosoftei (Dosoftei's House), Iasi

Casa Dosoftei (Dosoftei's House), Iasi

Casa Dosoftei, also known as the House with Arcades, is one of the oldest surviving secular buildings in Moldavia and the last remnant of the former St. Friday merchant quarter. Built over an older church cemetery, it reused parts of a medieval wall. Its arcades and vaulted rooms reflect Ottoman-style merchant design.

The building is linked to Metropolitan Dosoftei, an important scholar and poet of medieval Moldavia. His Psaltirea în versuri, printed in 1673 in Poland, was a major work of Romanian religious poetry. Around 1679, he brought a printing press to Moldavia and helped develop printing activity connected with this building.

Today, Casa Dosoftei houses the “St. Hierarch Dosoftei the Metropolitan” Museum, dedicated to old Romanian literature and printing. Exhibits include Macarie’s Liturghier from 1508, Varlaam’s Cazanie from 1643, an Eminescu-linked manuscript, and a model printing press. Its steep roof was restored during 1960s renovations using historical drawings.
