Palas Mall, Iasi

Palas Mall, Iasi

Palas Mall is a large mixed-use complex that combines shopping, offices, leisure areas, and public green space. Opened in 2012, it was built on land connected to the former medieval princely court. During construction, archaeological remains were found and partly preserved, including stone foundations, old household pits, and the Ghețăria Domnească, a deep stone icehouse once used to store winter ice and food.

The complex was designed to protect the view toward the Palace of Culture, so much of its structure extends downward into the hillside rather than rising high above the area. It includes hundreds of shops, restaurants, cafés, a cinema, event spaces, office buildings, and one of Romania’s largest underground parking facilities, with about 2,500 spaces. The project also became one of the country’s largest real estate investments outside Bucharest.

Its public garden is a major part of the experience. Lawns, fountains, walking paths, a small lake, and an open-air amphitheater create space for concerts, outdoor films, fairs, and seasonal events. A double-decker Venetian carousel imported from Italy adds a playful detail beside the historic palace backdrop. For tourists, Palas offers a clear view of the city’s contemporary life while keeping visible traces of its older princely past.
