McWane Science Center, Birmingham (must see)
Located in the heart of downtown Birmingham, the McWane Science Center is a dynamic museum and research archive that combines science, history, and imagination under one roof. Opened to the public on July 11, 1998, the center is housed in the beautifully renovated Loveman’s department store building, blending historic architecture with cutting-edge exhibits.
This family-friendly destination features a hands-on science center, an aquarium, and a 250-seat IMAX Dome Theater, offering immersive experiences for visitors of all ages. On the lower level, the World of Water exhibit introduces guests to over 50 species of aquatic life. From a touch tank filled with small sharks and rays to educational displays on water pollution and shark teeth under the microscope, this area provides a deep dive into marine and freshwater environments.
The second floor hosts the Alabama Collections Center, which holds more than 500,000 artifacts inherited from the former Red Mountain Museum and Discovery Place. Highlights include dazzling mineral samples, Native American artifacts, and an impressive fossil collection-featuring the Appalachiosaurus, the state fossil Basilosaurus cetoides, and one of the world’s largest collections of mosasaurs.
For young explorers, the Itty Bitty Magic City exhibit-also on the second floor-offers a miniature urban environment designed especially for small children. With a climbing structure, toddler play areas, and model buildings like a child-sized grocery store, the exhibit supports playful learning and family interaction.
Named in honor of the McWane family and McWane, Inc., who were instrumental in funding the project, the center stands on the former site of the Louis Saks department store, bringing science, history, and community engagement to life in one of Birmingham’s iconic historic spaces.
