Memorial des Martyrs de la Deportation (Deportation Martyrs Memorial), Paris

On the eastern periphery of the Île de la Cité lies a somber edifice, erected in memory of the in excess of 200,000 Frenchmen, women, and children – amongst whom were 76,000 Jewish individuals, including 11,000 young ones – who were cruelly dispatched to Nazi concentration camps during the dark and tragic period of World War II. The evocative memorial, inaugurated by Charles de Gaulle in 1962, was purposefully constructed with a sense of claustrophobia.

At the threshold of the crypt, visitors are confronted with austere concrete blocks marking the narrow entrance, while the sepulcher of an anonymous deportee slain at the Neustadt camp lies within. Thereafter, one traverses a dimly-lit, narrow gallery, replete with 200,000 shards of glass that symbolize the multitude of lives senselessly taken. At either end of the gallery, urns containing ashes from the camps are situated. Lastly, a sole, barred "window" separates the desolate, raw-concrete courtyard from the waters of the Seine.

Overall, the Memorial provides a sobering reminder of the horrors of war. It is an essential site to visit for those seeking to understand the impact of World War II on France and to pay their respects to those who suffered and perished during this dark period of history.
