Minnewater Park and Lake of Love, Bruges (must see)

Minnewater Park is home to the picturesque Lake of Love and the romantic Minnewater Bridge. The lake’s romantic reputation is associated with the legend of Minna, a young woman who fell in love with Stromberg, a warrior from a neighboring community.

According to the story, Minna’s father arranged for her to marry another man while her lover was away fighting. She fled into the forest to escape the marriage, but when Stromberg finally found her, she died of exhaustion in his arms. He is said to have buried her beside the water, which was later named in her memory.

Although this tale is popular, it is only a legend. Another traditional explanation suggests that the name refers to water spirits or nymphs that people once believed inhabited the lake. A second local tradition promises that couples who cross Minnewater Bridge together will enjoy eternal love. The bridge also offers one of the finest views across the lake and is a popular location for photographs.

Historically, the Lake of Love formed part of Brugge’s complex network of waterways. Several streams once converged in this area to form the River Reie, which flowed through the city. Locks were constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries to regulate the water level and protect Brugge from flooding.

Visitors can follow walking paths through the park, cross its bridges, and continue toward the nearby green city ramparts. Swans are frequently seen on the lake and canals, although they are associated with Brugge through tradition rather than serving as its official emblem. Minnewater Park also hosts outdoor events, most notably the annual Cactus Festival, which brings national and international musicians to the park each summer.
