Monument to Gediminas, Vilnius

Monument to Gediminas, Vilnius

The Monument to Gediminas in Vilnius is a beautiful bronze sculpture that pays tribute to one of Lithuania's most famous and influential rulers, Grand Duke Gediminas. Positioned near a horse and facing the Cathedral Bell Tower, the statue depicts Gediminas holding a sword in his left hand and blessing the city with his right hand.

The sculpture invites visitors to engage with it through a blue table attached to the pedestal, which provides a QR code and a URL for visitors to access more information about the sculpture and its history.

Gediminas, who lived from 1275 to 1341, was a highly skilled diplomat and ruler who left an indelible mark on Lithuania. He founded both Trakai and Vilnius and served as Grand Duke of Lithuania for 25 years, during which time he extended the state's borders and sphere of influence to the far east and south, effectively doubling Lithuania's size.

Gediminas is perhaps best known for his diplomatic efforts, which drew Europe's attention to Lithuania. In 1323, he wrote letters to Western Europe that mentioned Vilnius by name, effectively marking the beginning of the city's history.
