Monument to the Fighters for Soviet Power, Vladivostok

Monument to the Fighters for Soviet Power, Vladivostok (must see)

The Monument to the Fighters for Soviet Power is one of the most prominent Soviet-era landmarks in the Russian Far East and remains a central symbol of the revolutionary history of the region. Unveiled on April 29, 1961, the monument honours those who fought to establish Soviet authority during the revolution, civil war, and foreign intervention. Its opening came just seventeen days after Yuri Gagarin’s first spaceflight.

Created by sculptor Alexey Teneta after more than fifteen years of planning and design work, the monument was conceived on a grand scale. The central bronze soldier rises about 30 metres, holding a banner and trumpet as symbols of victory and political change. Teneta shaped the composition around a triangular form that draws the eye upward to the banner.

The monument includes additional sculptural groups depicting workers, sailors, partisans, and revolutionary supporters. Together, they present a narrative of struggle, mobilisation, and eventual triumph. An unusual feature is the orientation of the central figure, which faces the sea rather than the city. This choice reflected the monument’s role in a major Pacific port and symbolised Soviet authority standing watch on the eastern frontier of the country.

The surrounding public square was developed around the completed monument, transforming the area into an important civic space. Today, the site hosts ceremonies, public gatherings, and commemorative events, while the broad stone base has also become a popular meeting place for local residents and young skateboarders. The monument offers visitors a glimpse into Soviet public art, political symbolism, and the historical events that shaped the region during the 20th century.
