Dom Knigi (Book House), Vladivostok

Dom Knigi (Book House), Vladivostok

Dom Knigi, or Book House, occupies the former Revenue House of the Pyankov Brothers, completed in 1903 and designed by architect Ivan Meshkov. Its late classical and eclectic façade, with rusticated lower walls, balanced window lines, and restrained decoration, reflects the commercial confidence of the early twentieth century.

The Pyankov brothers, Mikhail, Vladimir, and Innokenty, were major Far Eastern entrepreneurs active in distilleries, glass production, timber, retail, and shipping. Vladimir Pyankov had a striking early biography. He was arrested in the 1880s for involvement with Narodnaya Volya, then later rebuilt his life through business. The building also housed apartments, shops, the Eden restaurant, and the Illusion cinema, one of the city’s early movie theatres.

Books became part of the building’s identity early on, through the Pyankovs’ own bookstore and reading hall. After nationalization in 1922, Soviet book trading and publishing activity reinforced its role as Dom Knigi. Later reconstruction preserved the historic façade while adapting the interior for modern commercial use, leaving visitors with a layered story of commerce, politics, entertainment, books, and reuse.
