Mosque el Faeh, Rabat
The Mosque el Faeh, also known as Ahl Fas Mosque or the Royal Mosque, is a distinguished religious site in Rabat. Located within the Mechouar of Al-Sayeed, adjacent to the Royal Palace, this mosque has long been associated with Morocco’s ruling dynasty and plays a significant role in the country's religious and political traditions.
Commissioned by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah in the 18th century, the mosque has been meticulously restored and maintained by successive monarchs, including Muhammad IV, Yusef, Muhammad V, Hassan II, and Muhammad VI. Its historical importance is further emphasized by the tradition of the Moroccan king delivering the Friday sermon (khotbah) and leading Eid prayers here, a custom dating back to the reign of Moulay Yusef.
Architecturally, the mosque blends modern and traditional Moroccan elements, featuring white walls and a green-tiled roof, hallmarks of the region’s Islamic design. While its interior remains off-limits to non-Muslims, visitors can admire its elegant exterior and the surrounding royal grounds.
Beyond its religious significance, the Mosque el Faeh remains a symbol of Morocco’s enduring heritage, monarchy, and spiritual identity, standing as a serene yet powerful presence in the heart of Rabat.
