National Postal Museum, Rabat
The National Postal Museum in Rabat is a museum dedicated to Moroccan philately and the broader history of the country's postal services. Opened in 1970, the museum is operated by Barid Al-Maghrib (Morocco Post) and is classified as a "historical heritage" site. It serves as the legal deposit of Moroccan philately, housing an extensive collection of stamps and postal artifacts that chronicle the evolution of communication in the country.
Originally inaugurated on June 30, 1970, the museum traced the history of Moroccan postal services from their origins in 1892, during the reign of Sultan Moulay Hassan I, to the modern era. A special commemorative stamp was issued to mark its opening, reflecting the importance of Moroccan cultural identity in philatelic art. Over time, the museum’s collection expanded to include not only stamps but also historical telecommunications equipment, including telegraph and telephone artifacts. However, the museum closed in 2005 for extensive renovation and modernization.
After a five-year redevelopment, the museum reopened in November 2019, featuring a refreshed and contemporary layout that combines modern exhibition techniques with a celebration of Moroccan identity. Now spanning over 700 square meters, the museum showcases more than 600 stamps and various postal artifacts, offering a dynamic insight into Morocco’s postal history.
The museum also features a gift shop, offering philatelic memorabilia and collectible stamps. Through its exhibits, the National Postal Museum provides visitors with a deep appreciation of the role of postal services in Morocco’s history, from traditional mail routes to modern communication networks.
