Mount Tabor Park, Portland

Mount Tabor Park is a large public park centred on an extinct volcanic cinder cone, one of the few such formations within a major American city. John C. Olmsted recommended the site for a public park in 1903, and its winding roads, stone stairways, and naturalistic landscape reflect the design principles later developed by Emanuel T. Mische. Its elevated slopes offer views of the skyline, Mount Hood, and the Cascade Range.

The park also preserves an important part of the historic water system. Its open-air reservoirs, built between 1894 and 1911, supplied drinking water for more than a century and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Volcanic cinders excavated from the crater were reused to surface early roads, while the gravity-fed water system historically generated electricity for the park's cast-iron lampposts. Trails pass more than 50 tree species, including Douglas firs and a heritage giant sequoia.

In 2023, Quiet Parks International designated Mount Tabor as the first Urban Quiet Park in the United States, recognising its natural soundscape. The park hosts concerts, fitness activities, and the annual PDX Adult Soapbox Derby. Its wooded slopes also attract birds and seasonal wildflowers.
