Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Portland (must see)

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden is a 9.49-acre botanical garden built around a spring-fed lake, wooded slopes, and a network of quiet walking paths. Its plant collection includes many species and hybrid rhododendrons, together with azaleas, ferns, maples, conifers, and other companion plants suited to the cool, shaded setting. Wooden bridges, small waterfalls, stone-lined channels, and viewpoints over the water help visitors move gradually through the landscape.

The site began to take its present form in 1950, when members of the local chapter of the American Rhododendron Society started developing a display and test garden on neglected parkland. Reed College students once staged outdoor plays here, calling part of the site Shakespeare Island. Volunteers cleared invasive growth, planted early collections, and organised the first rhododendron show in 1956. The current name was adopted in 1964.

Spring is the main flowering season, when the garden’s rhododendrons and azaleas cover the slopes with red, pink, purple, white, and yellow blooms. The layout allows visitors to compare different flower forms, leaf shapes, and growth habits at close range. Beyond the peak season, Japanese maples and other deciduous trees bring autumn colour, while evergreens, mosses, and water features maintain visual interest through winter and early spring.

The lake and wetland margins also provide habitat for many birds. Ducks and geese are common, while herons, hummingbirds, and smaller woodland species may be seen around the trees and shoreline. Benches are placed along the main paths for birdwatching and rest. The principal routes, entrance area, restrooms, and much of the garden are accessible, although some narrower paths and planted slopes can be uneven.
