Musee Camille Lemonnier (Camille Lemonnier Museum), Brussels
This house museum is dedicated to the renowned Belgian intellectual, writer, dramatist, and essayist, Camille Lemonnier, who was a prominent figure in the city's cultural elite for nearly five decades. Lemonnier (1844–1913) was a sharp-witted Francophone who began his career writing for the literary review, the Journal des Artistiques. He later ventured into novel writing, authored books of art criticism, including the "Histoire de Beaux-Arts en Belgique" (1887), and produced political texts. Often referred to as the "Marshall of Letters" and "the Belgian Zola", he was also a passionate art collector. However, his acerbic tongue often stirred controversy and led to bitter disputes, notably with the artist James Ensor.
Founded by Camille's daughter Louise in 1946, the museum is situated in a charming late 19th-century mansion that has retained its period charm. Inside, it houses an eclectic collection of art objects, ranging from sculptures and paintings to gilded books. The main upstairs room showcases paintings by Louise, displayed alongside portraits of her father created by Emile Claus, Constantin Meunier, and Isidore Verheyden. Among the standout sculptures are 'The Foolish Song' by Jef Lambeaux and 'Eternal Spring' by Auguste Rodin. Visitors can also catch a glimpse of Lemonnier's private world through a recreation of his former workshop.
While admission to the museum is free, it operates on a limited schedule, so it's advisable to inquire about visiting times in advance.
