Musée d'Arts Africains, Océaniens et Amérindiens, Marseille

The Museum of African, Oceanian, and Amerindian Arts in Marseille, located on the second floor of the Vieille Charité, focuses exclusively on artworks from these continents. It uniquely combines exhibits with scientific information about connected societies. The museum houses a diverse array of items, including masks from extensive 20th-century collections, displayed during the early exhibitions of extra-European arts held between 1930 and 1935, coinciding with a period of renewed interest in these cultures and their connection to modern art.

The museum, located on the second floor of Vieille Charité, has three rooms. The Africa room showcases a donation from Pierre Guerre's heirs, featuring masks, statues, reliquaries, and objects from old colonial museums in Marseille.

In the Oceania and America room, visitors can explore Doctor Gastaut's remarkable collection of sculpted human skulls, acquired in 1989. The room also displays Amerindian feather ornaments donated by Marcel Heckenroth, a medical doctor who received them during his service in French Guyana between 1939 and 1942.

The Mexico Room exhibits an impressive collection of popular art with over three thousand objects, including masks, ceramics, thread paintings, trees of life, and sculptures. Filmmaker François Reichenbach collected these items during travels in Mexico and generously bequeathed them to Marseille.

The Museum of African, Oceanian, and Amerindian Arts offers an enriching and immersive experience, providing insight into the art and cultures of these diverse continents.

Ligurians occupied the land, and being sort of Greek themselves, they didn't mind doing business.

The leader of the galley people was one called Protis. Protis was...  view more

Shopping in Marseille is a great way to mingle with the locals and immerse in new tastes, scents and customs. As with so much else in this melting-pot of a city, the top-of-the-range stores here rub shoulders with the funky little boutiques, high-street chains with scruffy discount outlets or traditional family groceries and bakeries.
