Musee de l'Imprimerie (Printing Museum), Nantes

The Printing Museum offers a captivating journey into the world of traditional bookmaking and printing, preserving the city's industrial heritage in a hands-on and engaging way. Located on Quai de la Fosse, within the Jacques-Demy media library, the museum was founded in 1986 by master printer Sylvain Chiffoleau and compositor-typographer Robert Colombeau. Their vision, supported by successive municipal governments, was to assemble and preserve printing equipment used in traditional book production, ensuring that this craftsmanship would not be forgotten.

What sets the museum apart is that nearly all of its historic machines-typographic, lithographic, and intaglio presses-remain in working condition. Visitors can observe demonstrations of mechanical and manual typesetting, witness the casting of metal type, and even see linotypes and foundry equipment in operation. Some of these machines were even featured in films such as Lost Illusions and The Tiger and the President, bringing authenticity to their historical settings. Despite its modest size, the museum is well-organized to allow space for live demonstrations and detailed exhibits.

Visitors are warmly welcomed by knowledgeable staff who enthusiastically guide them through the intricacies of the printing trade. Even the self-guided section offers a rich and educational experience, with well-presented display cases featuring tools, type, and equipment that trace the evolution of printing technology.
