Museum d'Histoire Naturelle (Natural History Museum), Nantes

The Natural History Museum of Nantes, located in the heart of the city, houses a rich and diverse collection dedicated to the natural sciences. Established in the early 19th century, it originated from a private cabinet founded in 1799 by François-René Dubuisson, a pharmacist passionate about natural history. The museum’s current location, behind the historic Hôtel des Monnaies, opened in 1875 and was designed by architect Gustave Bourgerel. Its layout includes a two-level grand hall and vestibule, offering an elegant space for exploration.

The museum’s collections span several disciplines, including mineralogy, paleontology, and zoology. Visitors can admire an impressive display of fossils, minerals, and stuffed animals, as well as a striking whale skeleton. A vivarium showcasing live animals was added in 1955, enhancing the museum's educational offerings. Over the years, significant contributors such as Frédéric Cailliaud and the Marquis d'Abadie helped expand the collections, the latter’s study being reconstructed in the museum to highlight his contributions.

Since the early 2000s, the museum has undergone a series of renovations to modernize its facilities and improve visitor experience. These include the refurbishment of the vivarium, the zoology gallery, and the Earth sciences gallery. Temporary exhibitions are frequently organized, ensuring that the museum remains a dynamic institution for scientific discovery and public engagement in Nantes.
