Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Oaxaca (Contemporary Art Museum of Oaxaca) was founded on February 28, 1992 by the Civil Association Friends of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca AC with the support of the state government, as well as the collaboration of the National Institute of Fine Arts. Thanks to the initiative of a group of citizens and artists, including the maestro Francisco Toledo , Rodolfo Morales, Arnulfo Aquino, Rubén Leyva, Sergio Hernández, Luis Zárate, among others.

The museum has 14 permanent exhibition halls and works by Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Gutiérrez, Rodolfo Nieto, Rodolfo Morales and Francisco Toledo.

The remaining rooms house temporary exhibitions of plastic, graphic, installation and photography arts. Since its founding, the Museum has presented exhibitions by artists such as Günther Gerzso, Jorge Du Bon, Francisco Toledo, Francis Alÿs, Mona Hatoum, James Brown, and Graciela Iturbide.

It carries out different cultural activities such as conferences, round tables, concerts, recitals and book presentations. The MACO is also home to the Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial.
