Museo de Mascaras (Mask Museum), San Miguel de Allende

The Mask Museum of San Miguel de Allende is owned and curated by Bill LeVasseur and offers visitors an unparalleled journey into the vibrant world of Mexican ceremonial masks and masked dancing. With over 500 authentic masks collected over a span of more than 25 years, the museum provides a unique glimpse into the intricate tapestry of traditional culture that has been preserved for generations.

Bill LeVasseur's passion for preserving and sharing the cultural significance of Mexican ceremonial masks led him on a remarkable journey. Over the years, he dedicated countless hours to immersing himself in the lives of indigenous communities across Mexico. His visits to remote villages and his participation in masked dancing ceremonies allowed him to not only collect an extraordinary array of masks but also to gain an intimate understanding of their historical, spiritual, and artistic significance.

In 2006, Bill and his wife Heidi transformed their vision into reality by opening the "Another Face of Mexico" mask museum to the public. The museum's collection is a living testament to the artistry and devotion of Mexican artisans who have crafted these masks with meticulous detail and reverence. Each mask tells a story, reflecting the diverse cultures, rituals, and beliefs of the indigenous communities from which they originate.

The museum experience goes beyond just the masks themselves. Alongside the impressive collection, the museum features texts, photos, and videos that provide a comprehensive insight into more than 40 distinct dance ceremonies. This multimedia approach enables visitors to delve deep into the context of these masks, connecting them to the performances and traditions they are an integral part of. From the elaborate and vibrant Aztec dances to the enchanting rituals of the Maya, the Mask Museum of San Miguel de Allende offers a kaleidoscope of cultural expressions.
