Museo Horne (Horne Museum), Florence
The Horne Museum offers a rare glimpse into the refined world of Renaissance Florence, not through a grand public collection but through the intimate setting of a historic Florentine palace. Housed in the elegant Palazzo Corsi on Via de' Benci, the museum preserves an exceptional collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, and decorative arts from the 14th and 15th centuries, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of a wealthy Renaissance home.
The building itself has a long history dating back to the early 1300s. After passing to the Corsi family in 1489, it was extensively rebuilt between 1495 and 1502, likely under the direction of architect Simone del Pollaiolo, known as Il Cronaca, with contributions from leading Florentine sculptors of the period. The palace later became the home of Herbert Percy Horne, an English architect, art historian, and passionate collector of Renaissance art, who purchased it in 1911 to house his growing collection.
Upon his death, Horne bequeathed both the palace and his collections to the Italian state, with the wish that they be preserved as a museum and cultural foundation. Today, the Horne Museum remains one of Florence’s most atmospheric museums, offering visitors an authentic and remarkably personal encounter with the art, craftsmanship, and daily life of the early Renaissance.
