Audio Guide: Florence Historic Center Walking Tour (Self Guided), Florence

Few cities have shaped the course of art and history quite like Florence. Birthplace of the Renaissance and home to some of the world's greatest artistic masterpieces, this Tuscan city has inspired generations of painters, sculptors, architects, and thinkers. Yet Florence's remarkable story began long before the Renaissance, in 59 BC, when Julius Caesar established a settlement for Roman veteran soldiers. Laid out like a Roman military camp, its main roads intersected at what is now Republic Square. Known in Roman times as Florentia, meaning "flowering" or "flourishing," the city would eventually live up to its name.

And flourish it did. During the Middle Ages and well into the Renaissance, Florence grew into one of Europe’s wealthiest and most influential cities. From the 14th to the 16th centuries, it became a major center of art, commerce, politics, and finance.

Many of the city’s most important landmarks took shape during this golden era. Chief among them is the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, crowned by Brunelleschi’s extraordinary dome - a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering. Nearby stands Giotto’s Bell Tower, while a short walk away, the imposing Old Palace has served as the center of Florentine civic life for centuries.

One of the best things about Florence is how much you can discover on foot. Within its compact historic center, you’ll find the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, home to masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. Just nearby, the lively Signoria Square offers an open-air display of Renaissance sculptures, while the medieval Old Bridge, lined with jewelry shops, provides one of the city's most recognizable views. You can also explore the magnificent Medici Chapels, where members of Florence’s most powerful family are buried, or visit the bustling Central Market, a great place to experience local flavors and everyday Florentine life.

Florence has endured its share of turmoil - from serving as the capital of newly unified Italy between 1865 and 1871 to suffering damage during World War II. Yet, much of its extraordinary heritage has survived. In 1982, its historic center was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you're ready to discover the heart of the Renaissance, our self-guided walking tour will take you through Florence’s most memorable sights. Just bring your curiosity, take your time, and discover the stories behind one of Italy’s most fascinating cities.
