Museo Stibbert (Stibbert Museum), Florence

Frederick Stibbert (1838–1906), born into an Italo-English family with a military background, had a lifelong passion for collecting various objects. Over time, his collection grew to an astonishing 50,000 items, many of which are now showcased in this museum that was once his own home.

Stibbert developed a particular fascination for medieval armor spanning the 15th to 19th centuries. Similar to how cars today are personalized, armor was customized by its owners to distinguish themselves and strike fear into their enemies. The museum boasts an impressive collection of around 12,000 European, Oriental, Islamic, and Japanese arms and armor. Among them are over 80 suits of Samurai armor and a multitude of swords. Additionally, Stibbert's eclectic collection includes costumes, with a special emphasis on Uzbek attire, exhibited in the Moresque Hall. Alongside these garments, you'll also discover an extensive array of swords, guns, and other weapons designed solely for lethal purposes.

The museum is housed in a villa just a short stroll from the city center, characterized by a captivating blend of neo-Gothic, Renaissance, and English eccentric styles.
