Museum Dr. Guislain, Ghent

The Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent is an intriguing institution housed within a neo-Gothic psychiatric hospital built in 1857, which was also Belgium’s oldest psychiatric clinic. Named after Dr. Joseph Guislain, a pioneering psychiatrist who advocated for the humane treatment of the mentally ill in the 1820s, the museum provides a compelling journey through the history of psychiatry, showcasing the evolution of mental health care from ancient trepanning to modern brain scans.

Opened in 1986, the museum features both rotating and permanent exhibitions, all presented in Dutch, French, and English. The permanent exhibits include a comprehensive history of psychiatry, exploring treatments across cultures and eras, from the use of ancient Greek trepanning tools to contemporary psychotropic drugs, and the Anti-Psychiatry movement. Visitors can also explore a unique catalog of photographs of mentally ill patients taken since the 1860s, which are historically significant as they were captured within the walls of the institution.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the museum is its collection of outsider art, featuring works created by self-taught artists, including those with mental illnesses. A notable example is the work of Serbian painter Goran Djurovic. The museum also presents exhibitions that delve into social themes, such as the ways people perceive each other, highlighted by the current exhibit "People on Show," which examines human relationships and perceptions.

The museum’s unique setting in a former psychiatric institution, combined with exhibits like Dr. D’Arsonval’s 1909 radiographic apparatus that resembles a Frankenstein-like contraption, offers an educational yet haunting experience. This setting underscores the museum’s mission: to educate the public about the complex and often troubling history of psychiatric care while honoring Dr. Guislain’s legacy of advocating for dignity and compassion in mental health treatment.

Why You Should Visit:
Most rooms have trilingual explanations (Flemish, French, English); the objects are well-arranged, and not too many.
The staff at the till are very knowledgeable and friendly. The grounds are great for a stroll, especially on a sunny day.
The exhibition of 'outsider art' is amazing. Made by people experiencing mental health issues, it contains art that is both strange and wonderful.

Tip:
One of the highlights here is sitting at the cafe in the courtyard of this calm, beautiful facility. For something spooky visit the other on-site café with the giant mannequins.

With the Frankish invasions at the end of the 4th century AD, the Celtic language was replaced by Old Dutch and this...  view more
