National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi

The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) stands as India's foremost art institution, established on March 29, 1954, by the Government of India. The main museum, located in Jaipur House, New Delhi, houses a remarkable collection of over 14,000 artworks, spanning from illustrious Indian artists like Thomas Daniell, Raja Ravi Verma, Abanindranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Jamini Roy, and Amrita Sher-Gil, to esteemed foreign artists and sculptures crafted by various talents. Remarkably, some of the oldest preserved works in the gallery date back to 1857.

Within its walls, visitors can witness a treasure trove of art, from the finest paintings to spiritual sculptures, and contemporary masterpieces by leading Indian artists. The NGMA also houses a plethora of publications and films celebrating artists' accomplishments, preserving their legacies for generations to come. The galleries are constantly evolving, showcasing important artistic objects, and hosting captivating art shows.

The NGMA Delhi branch is awe-inspiring with 12,000 square meters of exhibition space, making it one of the world's largest modern art museums. It's located at the end of Rajpath, near India Gate, and was formerly the Maharaja of Jaipur's residence, known as Jaipur House. The butterfly-shaped building with a central dome was designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1936, harmoniously integrated into Lutyens' Delhi. The Central Hexagon around India Gate, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, housed leading princely states' buildings.

In 2009, the NGMA expanded its horizons with the inauguration of a new wing. This addition increased the gallery's space six-fold, accommodating a new auditorium, a preview theatre, a conservation laboratory, a library, an academic section, as well as a cafeteria and museum shop, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
