Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum, Fort Lauderdale

The Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Museum, located in Fort Lauderdale, is a significant historical site, preserving the rich legacy of the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale (NASFL or NAS Fort Lauderdale). Established in 1942 during World War II, NAS Fort Lauderdale was a key air station among 257 activated during the conflict. It specialized in training pilots and crew members for the TBM/TBF Avenger aircraft.

The museum is housed in Building #8, known as The Link Trainer Building, which is notably the sole surviving structure of the once expansive naval complex, originally comprising over 200 buildings. This building's historical significance is further accentuated by its role in hosting 6-8 Link Trainer flight simulators, marking it as a vital educational and training hub during the war.

The museum offers diverse exhibits on naval aviation and WWII history, including artifacts like the historic Link Trainer and a recreated Soldier's Barracks. Visitors can delve into Flight 19's mystery and explore a vast collection of uniforms, gear, medals, and more. Original naval art, cartoons, lithographs, and over 10,000 photos and books are also on display.

The Captain John Payne Memorial Library, situated on-site, offers visitors the opportunity for research, enriching the educational experience provided by the museum. Outdoor exhibits further complement the museum's indoor collections, featuring WWII torpedoes, a TBM/TBF Avenger aircraft, an anti-aircraft gun, and an anti-submarine Hedgehog. The museum boasts a self-sustaining butterfly garden with a Flight 19 memorial, enhancing its offerings.
