Nicosia Municipal Arts Center, Nicosia

Nicosia Municipal Arts Center, Nicosia

The Nicosia Municipal Arts Center (NiMAC), affiliated with the Pierides Foundation, is the oldest and largest contemporary art center in Cyprus. It is housed in the former power station of Nicosia, a landmark of industrial architecture built in 1936. After standing abandoned for nearly two decades, the building was carefully restored and repurposed through a collaboration between the Electricity Authority of Cyprus and the Nicosia Municipality. The transformation was completed in 1994, earning the prestigious Europa Nostra Award that same year for excellence in cultural heritage conservation.

Located in the historical center of the city, NiMAC has since become a dynamic hub for contemporary and modern art. Over the past thirty years, it has hosted more than a hundred exhibitions, featuring notable Cypriot and international artists. Many of these shows have been organized in collaboration with major art institutions and museums across Europe and beyond.

The center’s mission is to promote the fine arts in Cyprus, and its facilities include a large exhibition space, a specialized art library, a restaurant, and a gift shop. NiMAC is also closely associated with the Pierides Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, further expanding its cultural reach. Through its innovative programming and commitment to artistic excellence, NiMAC continues to play a vital role in the cultural life of Cyprus.
