Nostalgiya (Nostalgia), Vladivostok
Nostalgiya is a restaurant and art-gallery space with roots in the late Soviet period. Founded in 1988, during Perestroika, it is often described as one of the early private restaurants in modern Russia. Its name, meaning “Nostalgia,” suits an interior shaped by framed art, folk objects, warm wood tones, and a sense of looking back to older domestic traditions.
The restaurant built its reputation on Russian and European cooking, with a strong focus on local ingredients. Its kitchen uses Far Eastern seafood such as king crab and scallops, alongside taiga berries, mushrooms, herbs, and produce grown or gathered through its own sources. One of its best-known dishes is borsch served inside a hollowed-out half-loaf of black rye bread.
The adjoining gallery, also established in 1988, adds another layer to the visit. It presents works by regional artists, and tourists buying original pieces may receive help with the official cultural certification needed to export art from Russia. In 2000, Nostalgiya received the Golden Crane award, a major national recognition in the Russian restaurant industry.
