Old St. Maternus Church, Cologne
The Old Saint Maternus Church, also known as the "chapel," is a small Romanesque church located near the Rhine in the historic center of Cologne-Rodenkirchen, a suburb of Cologne. This church is one of the 13 small Romanesque churches that were built outside the medieval city wall of Cologne.
During renovations in 1925, memorial stones were discovered in the walls of the church. These stones date back to early Christian times and were typically only used in churches that had baptismal and burial rights reserved for parish churches. This discovery suggests that the Old Saint Maternus Church may have had an early Christian predecessor.
The church consists of two naves, a choir, and a sacristy, with the central nave and semicircular apse dating back to the 10th century. In the 15th century, a side aisle with Gothic windows was added, and in the 17th century, a tower was built in front of it. The tower served as living quarters for the sexton in earlier centuries, and several rooms were set up within it.
Although the church has undergone several renovations and additions over the centuries, its interior was described as "not worth mentioning" in the late 19th century. Nonetheless, the Old Saint Maternus Church remains an important historical landmark in Cologne and is maintained by the Förderverein Romanische Kirchen Köln.

Cologne's Architectural Landmarks Walking Tour

Eventually, as the things settled, the architects were given the chance to build something that would really stand out.
