Our Lady Of Pompei, Syracuse
Our Lady of Pompei Church, located in Syracuse, has a rich history rooted in the Italian-American immigrant community. Construction began in 1924, with the church originally designed to serve as a spiritual hub for the growing Italian population in the area. Though still under construction, the first Mass was held in 1925, and conducted in Italian, reflecting the community’s cultural and religious traditions. A tragic fire in 1937 forced the church to relocate, but the congregation persevered, purchasing a new site in 1945. Construction on the current building began in 1950, and the church was completed in 1952.
In 2008, Our Lady of Pompei merged with Saint Peter’s Church, continuing its legacy of service and community engagement. Today, the parish remains an active and vibrant center of worship and outreach. It offers weekly Masses, volunteer opportunities, and a strong emphasis on community involvement. The church encourages each member’s contribution, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose within the congregation.
Our Lady of Pompei’s welcoming spirit extends beyond religious services, with resources such as cookbooks and a weekly bulletin to keep the community informed. Its dedication to tradition, faith, and inclusivity has made it an important cultural and spiritual resource in Syracuse. The church continues to serve as a place of support, bringing together individuals and families to engage in activities that strengthen both their faith and community bonds.
